West Point Grey Baptist has a rich heritage. In December 1926 a group of 12 people started gathering at the home of a local dentist W.S. Watson to discuss the feasability of forming a Baptist congregation in the area. This small group grew, and in 1927 they started meeting in a rented church on West 4th Ave. By 1932 the group had raised enough funds to construct their own building at the corner of 11th and Sasamat - where the current church building is located. Over the years our church has been effective in reaching out to the local community and also to students on the UBC campus.
Our main focus, however, is not on the past, but on the present. We continue to gather as a community of ordinary people who have experienced the transforming reality of God's love, presence and power in Jesus Christ.
Thus, our vision is to experience and share Jesus Christ.
And our mission is to do this by:
- Gathering as a community of the Father’s sons and daughters.
- Becoming like Jesus Christ as we grow together.
- Celebrating the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
- Sharing our resources with those in need.
- Going as servants into all the world.
We carry out the mission in many ways: as we gather on Sundays; in our relationship together; through our children's and youth ministry; as we enjoying sharing potluck lunches; through our Saturday morning ESL classes; as we gather in small groups during the week; in our all age Sunday School program; by inviting people on to participate in the Alpha courses; by praying and caring for each other; by running our Preschool; by supporting Seeds of Hope ministry to help those struggling with addictions; by supporting each other as we work and live in our various communities and workplaces; by giving financially to various people and ministries throughout the world involved in sharing God's love in practical ways; and many other ways as well.
We call ourselves a "Baptist Church" even though many of us come from a variety of Christian traditions. In practice, being "Baptist" means that we decide things by gathering together the community and discerning God's leading. We also following the practice of baptising those who, in a committed way, confess their faith in Jesus. We are also associated with a group of Baptist Churches who call themselves "Canadian Baptists of Western Canada" formerly known as the Baptist Union of Western Canada).
